For a long time, sludge generated from poultry waste treatment has been associated with characteristics that make it difficult to process. In fact, this waste still holds potential as a valuable source of nutrients.<\/h6>\n
Indonesia\u2019s poultry industry continues to grow significantly in line with rising demand for animal protein. However, behind this acceleration lies a fundamental challenge that often receives less attention\u2014waste generated from poultry processing activities. Two commonly overlooked sources are wastewater from egg washing and poultry slaughtering processes.<\/h6>\n
In practice, this waste is typically treated as residue that must be disposed of immediately. Yet, its characteristics indicate high organic content, including dissolved proteins, fats, and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. If discharged without proper treatment, this waste can pollute the environment, degrade water quality, and pose health risks to communities surrounding production sites.<\/h6>\n
Egg washing wastewater, for example, is generated during sanitation processes aimed at maintaining product quality. However, the used water often still contains high levels of organic matter and chemical residues, including eggshell fragments, poultry manure, egg proteins, and disinfectants.<\/h6>\n
\"\"Meanwhile, waste from poultry slaughterhouses (PSH) originates from various stages, including defeathering, evisceration (removal of internal organs), and carcass washing. Each stage produces wastewater with high and fluctuating organic loads, such as blood, fat, feathers, and suspended solids, resulting in elevated Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and nutrient levels.<\/h6>\n
Due to the high water usage in production processes, wastewater from these post-harvest activities typically undergoes multiple treatment stages, including filtration, physicochemical processes (such as electrocoagulation), and biological treatments (anaerobic and aerobic), to meet discharge quality standards before being released into the environment.<\/h6>\n
However, this stage is not the end. Waste treatment processes almost always generate by-products or residues that still have potential value. One such by-product is sludge. This is where a new paradigm is emerging\u2014waste is no longer viewed merely as an industrial burden, but as an underutilized resource.<\/h6>\n
One approach that is gaining traction is the bioconversion of waste using larvae of the Black Soldier Fly<\/span><\/span> (BSF). BSF larvae are known for their ability to decompose various types of organic waste. With an efficient digestive system, they can convert organic matter into biomass rich in protein and fat within a relatively short period. This capability makes BSF a strong candidate for integrated waste management systems in the livestock sector.<\/h6>\n
Sludge from poultry wastewater treatment can be reused as part of larval feed through methods such as flocculation or electrocoagulation. While sludge has long been considered difficult to handle, its composition actually contains sufficient carbon, nitrogen, and minerals to support maggot growth.<\/h6>\n
