During transitional seasons, poultry face a dual challenge: environmental stress and a decline in immune resilience.<\/h6>\n
The seasonal transition phase often becomes a critical period in the field. As explained by Peter Yan, Commissioner of Medion Ardhika Bhakti, during an online session on Friday (March 13), this period is closely associated with an increased spread of diseases. \u201cCases of heat stress in the field have increased. In fact, heat stress remained the most dominant non-infectious condition throughout 2025, driven by a prolonged dry season that lasted from August and only subsided in October 2025,\u201d he stated.<\/h6>\n
This phenomenon is not without cause. Rapid environmental changes create an imbalance in the microclimate inside poultry houses, directly affecting bird health and performance. On one hand, residual high humidity from the rainy season continues to influence litter conditions and air quality. Damp litter becomes an ideal medium for the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. In addition, ammonia levels tend to rise due to suboptimal organic decomposition. This condition not only disrupts the respiratory system but also weakens the mucosal defense, which serves as the first line of protection against infection.<\/h6>\n
This combination of factors results in a dual burden for poultry: environmental stress and reduced immunity. The immune system becomes more vulnerable as energy that should be allocated for growth and production is instead diverted to maintaining physiological balance (homeostasis). Under such conditions, previously opportunistic pathogens can become serious threats.<\/h6>\n
Unfortunately, transitional seasons are still often perceived as a \u201cnormal\u201d phase that does not require specific management adjustments. Many farmers assume seasonal changes are uncontrollable, leading to reactive rather than preventive responses. Interventions are typically implemented only after performance declines or disease symptoms appear\u2014at which point losses have already begun.<\/h6>\n
In fact, an adaptive management approach is crucial during this period. Adaptation should not be seen as an additional measure, but as a core strategy to maintain production stability. Simple actions such as optimizing ventilation, adjusting stocking density, and improving litter management can significantly reduce risks.<\/h6>\n
Strengthening biosecurity programs is equally important in facing seasonal changes. The movement of people, equipment, and vehicles must be more strictly controlled to prevent the introduction of disease agents. Sanitation of housing and surrounding environments should also be intensified, particularly in areas prone to contamination.<\/h6>\n
From a nutritional perspective, Dudung Abdul Malik from Research and Development at Farmsco Feed Indonesia explained on Wednesday (March 11, 2026) that during heat stress, chickens tend to reduce feed intake to minimize metabolic heat production, while water consumption increases as a natural cooling mechanism. This imbalance can potentially lead to nutrient deficiencies if not properly managed.<\/h6>\n
Therefore, feed formulation adjustments are necessary to help poultry cope with environmental stress. The addition of vitamins, minerals, and specific feed additives such as antioxidants and immunomodulators can help enhance immune response.<\/h6>\n
Equally important is more intensive monitoring during transitional periods. Even minor changes in behavior, feed intake, or physical condition should be identified early as warning signs of potential health issues.<\/h6>\n
However, it is important to recognize that weather patterns in recent years have become increasingly unpredictable. Inconsistent seasonal patterns make accurate forecasting more difficult. Therefore, this discussion should be viewed as a projection and anticipatory approach rather than an absolute reference.<\/h6>\n
