POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta \u2013 The government, through the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health Services (Ditjen PKH), continues to strengthen stabilization measures for the national layer chicken subsector amid egg price fluctuations occurring in several regions. These efforts are aimed at maintaining the sustainability of smallholder farmers\u2019 businesses while ensuring food affordability for the public.<\/h6>\n
Director General of Livestock and Animal Health Services, Agung Suganda, stated that the government understands the pressure currently faced by layer farmers due to weakening egg prices at the producer level. He also emphasized that directives from the Minister of Agriculture and Head of the National Food Agency, Andi Amran Sulaiman, highlight the importance of the government\u2019s presence in safeguarding the sustainability of smallholder poultry farming businesses so they can continue to grow.<\/h6>\n
According to him, the government continues to strengthen coordination with ministries, regional governments, farmer associations, and business actors to maintain a balance between national egg supply and demand.<\/h6>\n
\u201cWe continue to encourage stronger market absorption, interregional distribution, downstream development of livestock products, and the optimization of egg utilization in various public nutrition programs. These measures are important so that prices at the farmer level can return to a more stable level,\u201d said Agung in Jakarta on Thursday, May 7, 2026.<\/h6>\n
Agung added that Indonesia\u2019s strong egg production capacity serves as one of the pillars of national food security and therefore must be maintained through improvements in trade systems, distribution, and downstream development so that the economic benefits can be more evenly enjoyed by smallholder farmers.<\/h6>\n
Amid the ongoing price dynamics, several farmer associations confirmed that conditions in the field remain relatively conducive. Chairwoman of Rumah Kebersamaan BKT NT Blitar, Eti Marlina, stated that egg trading activities at the farmer level are still running based on mutually agreed prices.<\/h6>\n
\u201cCurrent egg prices are indeed still below the Government Purchase Reference Price (HAP) of Rp26,500\/kg due to high production supply amid weakening market absorption over the past few weeks,\u201d she explained.<\/h6>\n
She also mentioned that several farmer associations, during a national meeting on May 2, 2026, agreed to maintain communication and coordination with the government.<\/h6>\n
A similar statement was delivered by Chairman of Koperasi Unggas Sejahtera Kendal, Suwardi. According to him, farmers in Kendal and surrounding areas continue striving to maintain egg price stability at the local level.<\/h6>\n
\u201cLayer farmers in Kendal and nearby areas continue to work to keep the situation conducive, including by maintaining egg selling prices so they do not continue to decline,\u201d he said.<\/h6>\n
Meanwhile, the regional government in Magetan Regency has begun strengthening response measures through coordination among regional agencies. One of the initiatives being discussed is increasing egg absorption through the addition of egg-based menus in the Free Nutritious Meals Program (MBG).<\/h6>\n
The government is also continuing to strengthen downstream livestock product development to expand market opportunities and improve farmers\u2019 production absorption. Director of Livestock Product Downstreaming at Ditjen PKH, Makmun, stated that downstreaming is an important strategy for creating added value while strengthening the stability of farmers\u2019 businesses.<\/h6>\n
\u201cWe continue to encourage the development of processed egg products and diversification in the utilization of livestock products so that the market becomes broader. Downstreaming will help create added value while also strengthening the stability of farmers\u2019 businesses,\u201d said Makmun.<\/h6>\n
According to him, increasing animal protein consumption is also an important step in maintaining the sustainability of the national livestock subsector.<\/h6>\n
\u201cWe are optimistic that national egg consumption still has great potential to continue increasing. Through stronger nutrition education and broader utilization of livestock products in various government programs, future market opportunities will become even greater,\u201d Makmun concluded.<\/h6>\n
