POULTRYINDONESIA, Bogor<\/span><\/span> \u2013 The Perhimpunan Peternak Rakyat Mandiri Indonesia<\/span><\/span> (Permindo) held a major consolidation meeting in response to the increasingly difficult conditions faced by Indonesia\u2019s independent poultry farmers. The gathering, held in Bogor on Wednesday (May 20, 2026), was attended by various poultry organizations, including Garda Organisasi Peternak Ayam Nasional<\/span><\/span>, Peternak Pembudidaya Unggas Niaga<\/span><\/span>, Komunitas Peternak Unggas Nasional<\/span><\/span>, and independent poultry farmers from various regions.<\/h6>\n
The consolidation became an important momentum for smallholder farmers to voice concerns over conditions that have worsened over recent months. Farmers are currently facing double pressure as live bird (LB) prices continue to decline, while production costs have risen significantly due to expensive feed and day-old chicks (DOC).<\/h6>\n
Chairman of Perhimpunan Peternak Rakyat Mandiri Indonesia<\/span><\/span>, Kusnan<\/span><\/span>, explained that the consolidation was organized to discuss strategies for stabilizing LB prices ahead of several important periods, such as Eid al-Adha and the month of Suro, which are traditionally known as periods of declining chicken consumption.<\/h6>\n
\u201cToday we are consolidating efforts regarding price stabilization to face future conditions. We will soon face Eid al-Adha, and afterward prices usually decline because many consumers substitute chicken with sacrificial meat. Then next month comes Suro, when people generally hold fewer celebrations, so consumption also decreases,\u201d Kusnan stated.<\/h6>\n
According to him, the situation must be anticipated immediately because it could further worsen conditions for smallholder farmers, who are already in a difficult position. He emphasized that Indonesia\u2019s poultry market still heavily depends on traditional wet markets, which account for around 70 percent of national chicken trade.<\/h6>\n
\u201cIt turns out that traditional wet markets remain the dominant market. Everyone is competing there together with large integrated companies. If this is not addressed seriously, independent farmers could gradually be pushed aside,\u201d he said.<\/h6>\n
Kusnan also criticized the government\u2019s current measures, saying they have not addressed the root problems within the people\u2019s poultry industry. He argued that various meetings and pricing agreements so far have only provided temporary, short-term solutions.<\/h6>\n
\u201cI see the meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday as merely a firefighting effort, not a real solution to the root problem. Previously we tried to maintain prices at Rp21,000, then it fell again to Rp20,000, and eventually the agreement collapsed once more,\u201d he stressed.<\/h6>\n
Previously, independent poultry farmers, the government, and large poultry companies had agreed on a live bird price of Rp19,500 per kilogram at the farmer level. However, the figure remains far below farmers\u2019 production cost (HPP), which is currently above Rp20,000 per kilogram.<\/h6>\n
Secretary General of Perhimpunan Peternak Rakyat Mandiri Indonesia<\/span><\/span>, Heri Irawan<\/span><\/span>, stated that actual field conditions are much more severe than reflected in formal data. He highlighted the Farmer Exchange Rate (NTP) indicator, which according to data from Badan Pusat Statistik<\/span><\/span> (BPS) remains above 100. However, he argued that the reality on the ground tells a different story, as chicken prices remain below production costs while input costs continue to rise.<\/h6>\n
\u201cIn reality, as of April, the burden on farmers has been extremely heavy. Prices remain below production costs, while feed prices are increasing and DOC prices are still high. That is what we are highlighting regarding the farmer exchange rate,\u201d Heri explained.<\/h6>\n
He noted that live bird prices currently hover around Rp19,500 per kilogram, while production costs have surpassed Rp20,000 per kilogram. Feed prices are now approaching Rp9,000 per kilogram, while DOC prices remain around Rp6,000 per chick.<\/h6>\n
This situation has forced many farmers to continue selling at a loss. Chairman of Peternak Pembudidaya Unggas Niaga<\/span><\/span>, Wismarianto<\/span><\/span>, who also attended the consolidation, stated that smallholder farmers cannot continue being forced to endure prolonged losses.<\/h6>\n
\u201cHow can Rp19,500 be enough when the production cost itself has already reached Rp21,800? Are we expected to keep losing money? We are businesspeople\u2014we do not want losses. That is why we speak the truth, even if it is bitter,\u201d he said.<\/h6>\n
\"\"In his remarks, Permindo advisor Hartono<\/span><\/span> emphasized the importance of population control and consistent reference pricing to help stabilize market conditions. He warned that without solidarity, the independent farming ecosystem could become increasingly fragmented amid intense industry competition.<\/h6>\n
Meanwhile, a farmer named Wayan<\/span><\/span> proposed expanding the absorption of locally produced chicken and eggs through various government programs, such as stunting prevention initiatives, public protein assistance, and the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program.<\/h6>\n
According to him, farmers should not rely solely on the Ministry of Agriculture\u2019s policies. Cross-ministerial programs involving the Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Trade should also be engaged so that independent farmers\u2019 production can be absorbed more broadly.<\/h6>\n
At the same event, Daily Chairman of Garda Organisasi Peternak Ayam Nasional<\/span><\/span>, Setya Winarno<\/span><\/span>, encouraged all farmers to remain optimistic yet realistic in facing current conditions.<\/h6>\n
\u201cLet us stay united in maintaining this Rp19,500 base price as an initial step while continuing to fight for higher prices. Make use of every government program opportunity, and most importantly, do not depend too heavily on a single supplier of production inputs so that we have alternatives for cost efficiency,\u201d he said.<\/h6>\n
During the consolidation, Permindo and other poultry organizations formulated three key points as the direction of their future struggle.<\/h6>\n
First, safeguarding a minimum selling price. Farmers agreed to maintain Rp19,500 as the last line of defense to prevent prices from falling further, even though the figure still remains below production costs.<\/h6>\n
Second, strengthening the collective bargaining position among independent poultry farmer associations. Permindo believes smallholder farmers must unite to gain stronger bargaining power against both the government and large integrated poultry companies.<\/h6>\n
Third, encouraging joint downstream development mechanisms. So far, independent farmers have relied too heavily on selling live birds in traditional markets. Therefore, downstream development and market diversification are needed so farmers can gain added value and reduce dependence on fluctuations in the live bird market.<\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
