Water quality also deserves greater attention, as it can serve as one of the pathways through which pathogens enter the production system. This issue was highlighted during the seminar Unlocking Better Farm Performance Through Advanced Disease Control, organized by YUKI Water Treatment in Jakarta on Monday (June 15).

During the event, industry players and academics alike emphasized the wide variation in water sources used by poultry farms across Indonesia. Differences in raw water quality, ranging from mineral content to the potential for microbial contamination, present unique challenges in maintaining flock health and supporting production performance.

Kamaru Budianto, Sales & Marketing Director of YUKI Water Treatment, stated that water conditions vary from farm to farm and therefore require solutions tailored to each farm’s specific circumstances.

“Raw water conditions differ from one farm to another. Some water sources contain high levels of lime, while others have elevated iron content. In general, however, most water sources still present potential issues that need to be addressed through proper treatment,” he said.

According to Budianto, awareness of the importance of water quality in the livestock sector still needs to be improved. Farmers tend to focus more on feed, vaccination programs, and management practices, even though water quality plays an equally important role in evaluating flock performance.

This perspective is also supported by scientific evidence. Dr. Okti Nadia Poetri, a virology, immunology, and epidemiology expert from IPB University, explained that diseases can still enter farms even when biosecurity programs are in place. In addition to humans, vehicles, equipment, pests, and wild birds, water is one of the factors that can serve as a transmission route for disease-causing agents.

According to her, poorly managed water sources are vulnerable to microbial contamination.

“Water is one of the biosecurity pathways that is often overlooked. If not managed properly, water lines can develop biofilms that serve as breeding grounds for bacteria. When these bacteria are carried into drinking systems, the risk of disease in poultry increases,” she explained.

She further emphasized that water quality affects digestive tract health, microflora balance, nutrient absorption, and the immune response of poultry. Therefore, water quality evaluation should become an integral part of biosecurity audits, alongside other factors such as human traffic, vehicles, equipment, and the farm environment.

“Biosecurity is not merely about having SOPs in place; it is about ensuring that all procedures are implemented consistently. We cannot control every disease outside the farm, but we can control the pathways through which they enter,” she concluded.

A similar view was expressed by Dien Ho, Asia Pacific Regional Manager of Luminor Environmental Inc. He believes that water management must be approached comprehensively, beginning with an understanding of the water source being used and extending to the implementation of treatment systems that meet on-farm requirements. However, farmers cannot rely solely on technology, regardless of how advanced or high-quality it may be.

“Water treatment technology is only one part of the solution. Equally important is ensuring that the system is designed according to actual needs and supported by continuous monitoring,” he said.

For more information about Indonesia’s poultry industry, join us on the Poultry Indonesia WhatsApp Channel.

POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta – Disease control efforts in poultry farming cannot rely solely on vaccination and the general implementation of biosecurity measures.
