PT Elanco Animal Health Indonesia officially introduced AviPro\u2122 IB-ND C131, a live attenuated combination vaccine for Newcastle Disease (ND) and Infectious Bronchitis (IB) protection in commercial poultry. Held at the Ballroom of Hotel Tentrem Jakarta on April 27, 2026, Muhammad Abdillah, Brand Manager of Elanco Animal Health Indonesia, opened the Elanco Masterclass by introducing the three speakers present for the occasion: Prof. Michael Haryadi Wibowo from Gadjah Mada University, international poultry health expert Prof. Dr. Sjaak de Wit, and Elanco Technical Manager Dr. Nicholas Phuah.<\/h6>\n
“On this occasion, PT Elanco Animal Health Indonesia, in collaboration with PT SHS International, organized the Elanco Masterclass to discuss the latest updates on ND and IB, featuring speakers from different countries. We hope this provides a rich diversity of perspectives. The goal is for everyone to receive updates regarding both global and local challenges in ND and IB, including Elanco’s new vaccine product that can provide protection for up to 8 weeks,” explained Muhammad Abdillah.<\/h6>\n
Furthermore, drh. Nining Indiarti, Jakarta Area Coordinator for PT SHS International, mentioned that the arrival of AviPro\u2122 IB-ND C131 serves as a solution to provide earlier and longer-lasting protection, while helping farmers tackle ever-evolving disease challenges. The vaccine can also be applied starting from day-old chicks (DOC). “We hope that AviPro\u2122 IB-ND C131 will not only be a vaccine but a true partner for farmers in maintaining chicken health and boosting business productivity,” she expressed.<\/h6>\n
Poultry Industry Challenges<\/b><\/h6>\n
In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Sjaak de Wit explained that Newcastle Disease remains a serious threat in various countries, including the Asian region which faces relatively high challenge pressures. According to him, the success of ND control depends not only on the type of vaccine used but also on the quality of vaccination execution in the field.<\/h6>\n
\u201cIn many cases, the biggest problem is not the vaccine itself, but how it is applied. The quality of vaccination heavily determines the final outcome in the field,\u201d stated Prof. Sjaak.<\/h6>\n
He explained that conventional genotype II-based ND vaccines are still capable of providing good clinical protection, including against the circulating ND GVII strain. However, factors such as biosecurity, immunosuppression, and infection pressure significantly influence the effectiveness of that protection.<\/h6>\n
Prof. Sjaak also reminded the audience that ND does not only cause mortality but also increases viral shedding, thereby accelerating the spread of the disease within a population. In addition to Newcastle Disease, another frequently encountered field challenge is Infectious Bronchitis. The IB virus is known to have a very high mutation capacity, consistently generating various new variants.<\/h6>\n
As a result, IB cases frequently emerge with a highly diverse range of symptoms, spanning from mild respiratory distress to subtle performance drops that are difficult to detect. \u201cIB is often subclinical. Just because there are no respiratory signs does not mean there are no losses. Lower body weights, worsened FCR, and secondary infections can still occur,\u201d Prof. Sjaak explained.<\/h6>\n
He added that IB vaccination strategies must be tailored accurately to field conditions. Utilizing specific vaccine combinations can help broaden cross-protection without having to add too many vaccine strains simultaneously.<\/h6>\n
In the second session, Prof. Michael Haryadi Wibowo explained that Newcastle Disease (ND) and Infectious Bronchitis (IB) remain massive challenges for the poultry industry, particularly in tropical regions like Indonesia. High temperatures, humidity, and variations in biosecurity implementation are key factors that often cause vaccination programs to deliver suboptimal results.<\/h6>\n
Prof. Michael highlighted that the evolution of IB virus variants in Indonesia is becoming increasingly complex, including the detection of QX-like and 793B-like strains, which complicate cross-protection between genotypes. This condition means vaccination approaches can no longer rely on conventional methods or depend solely on a single vaccine strain. \u201cToday, the challenge is not just how to vaccinate, but how to ensure the vaccine is capable of providing protection against the wide array of viruses evolving in the field,\u201d he noted.<\/h6>\n
Beyond environmental factors, he also explained the challenges posed by maternal derived antibodies (MDA). High variations in maternal antibodies within a single flock can create a “window of susceptibility”\u2014a period when maternal antibodies begin to decline, but the active immunity from vaccination has not yet fully formed. Prof. Michael emphasized that successful ND-IB vaccination in tropical regions depends not only on the vaccine type but is also heavily influenced by environmental management, application quality, bird condition, and consistent field monitoring.<\/h6>\n
ND and IB Protection in One Vaccine<\/b><\/h6>\n
To address these field needs, Elanco introduced AviPro\u2122 IB-ND C131 as a combination vaccine providing both ND and IB protection in a single application. This product contains the IB Massachusetts H120 strain and the ND Clone 131 strain, formulated to deliver practical protection with a long duration of immunity.<\/h6>\n
Dr. Nicholas Phuah explained that AviPro\u2122 IB-ND C131 was developed to help farmers achieve optimal protection with simpler vaccination interventions. \u201cWe wanted to present a vaccine that is practical to use, safe from DOC onward, yet highly capable of providing robust protection against ND and IB,\u201d stated Dr. Nicholas.<\/h6>\n

One point that attracted significant attention during this product launch was the vaccine’s safety profile. Based on testing conducted on day-old SPF chickens, AviPro\u2122 IB-ND C131 proved safe when administered via spray vaccination, causing no mortality or respiratory distress. Observations up to 14 days post-vaccination showed an absence of clinical signs or mortality in the vaccinated group.<\/h6>\n
Additionally, evaluation of reproductive organs up to 70 days of age showed no abnormalities resulting from the vaccination. \u201cSafety data indicates that AviPro\u2122 IB-ND C131 is safe to use from day one, including its safety regarding the reproductive tract,\u201d Dr. Nicholas clarified. The vaccine’s Intracerebral Pathogenicity Index (ICPI) value was also reported to be below the standard limit of the European Pharmacopoeia, signifying that the vaccine’s safety level remains strictly maintained.<\/h6>\n
Remains Effective Despite Maternal Antibodies<\/b><\/h6>\n
The presence of maternal derived antibodies (MDA) often poses a distinct challenge in early vaccination because it can interfere with the development of active immunity. However, based on challenge test results presented by Elanco, AviPro\u2122 IB-ND C131 remains capable of providing optimal protection even when administered to chickens with MDA.<\/h6>\n
In the Newcastle Disease challenge, approximately 90% of vaccinated SPF chickens remained protected against clinical signs and mortality for up to eight weeks post-vaccination. Meanwhile, in the IB challenge, chickens vaccinated via either spray or drinking water consistently maintained normal ciliary activity.<\/h6>\n
According to Dr. Nicholas, a long duration of protection can help farmers reduce the need for additional vaccination interventions during the production cycle. \u201cExtended protection certainly offers practical advantages for farmers, especially in modern production systems facing high disease pressures,\u201d he stated.<\/h6>\n
