Amid the increasingly efficient and productive layer industry, lighting management is another important aspect that needs to be considered. Farmers have traditionally focused more on feed quality, genetics, and health programs, even though lighting plays an equally important role in supporting laying hen performance. Light not only helps chickens see their surroundings, but also functions as a biological signal that regulates various physiological processes in the body.<\/h6>\n
This was explained by Anne Lin, Foreign Sales representative at Xiamen Good Light Technology Co., Ltd., when she was interviewed at Indo Livestock on Thursday (June 18). She explained that light is one of the environmental factors affecting poultry growth and productivity. According to her, the choice of light color, intensity, and duration of exposure can have different effects on chickens\u2019 physiological conditions.<\/h6>\n
\u201cLight does not merely serve to illuminate the poultry house. Certain light spectra can influence poultry behavior, growth, and reproductive performance,\u201d said Anne Lin.<\/h6>\n
This statement is consistent with various studies showing that chickens are highly sensitive to light. Unlike humans, who rely primarily on their eyes as the main organ of vision, chickens can perceive light stimuli not only through their eyes but also through receptors connected to the nervous and hormonal systems. When light is perceived by the body, the signal is transmitted to the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which play important roles in regulating reproductive hormone production.<\/h6>\n
\u201cIn laying hens, this mechanism is particularly important because it is directly related to ovarian development and the egg formation process. Appropriate lighting stimulates the release of Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH), two key hormones involved in egg follicle development.\u201d<\/h6>\n
Therefore, Anne emphasized the importance of establishing an appropriate lighting program in layer houses so that chickens reach sexual maturity at the ideal time and maintain optimal egg production.<\/h6>\n
Lighting Management Strategies<\/strong><\/h6>\n
In layer management, one aspect that must be considered is the photoperiod, or the duration of light and darkness that chickens receive each day. Chickens are highly responsive to day length. When the duration of light increases, chickens interpret the condition as an environment conducive to reproduction, resulting in increased reproductive activity.<\/h6>\n
\u201cConversely, when the lighting duration decreases, the body tends to reduce reproductive activity. This explains why lighting programs are an important tool for controlling egg production,\u201d she explained.<\/h6>\n
During the starter and grower phases, lighting is generally restricted to prevent chickens from reaching sexual maturity too early. If hens begin laying before their bodies have developed adequately, egg size tends to be smaller and long-term production performance may be compromised. Once chickens enter the pre-layer phase, lighting duration is gradually increased to stimulate reproductive organ development.<\/h6>\n
