POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta \u2013<\/strong> High feed costs amid persistently low egg prices are putting increasing pressure on the sustainability of layer farming businesses. The situation has even forced some farmers to begin leaving their poultry houses empty because they can no longer afford feed costs. The issue emerged during a public hearing between layer farmers affiliated with the National Layer Farmers Association (Pinsar Petelur Nasional\/PPN) and Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Wednesday (October 7).<\/h6>\n
Yesi Yuni Astuti, Chairperson of the Berkah Telur Blitar Cooperative, conveyed the concerns of smallholder layer farmers over the prolonged decline in egg prices, which has continued for months. She urged the government to introduce regulations that would protect the sustainability of smallholder farming businesses.<\/h6>\n
Yesi explained that since April 2026, following the Eid al-Fitr holiday, farm-gate egg prices had continued to decline, falling below the Government Reference Price (Harga Acuan Pemerintah\/HAP). According to farmers\u2019 records, egg prices, which previously stood at around Rp23,000 per kilogram, continued to slide to Rp17,100 per kilogram at farms in Blitar.<\/h6>\n
She said the situation had persisted for seven months, causing farmers to incur losses every day. Conditions have become increasingly burdensome for small-scale farmers who operate on limited land around their homes.<\/h6>\n
\u201cRaising layer chickens is our only occupation and source of livelihood. If we continue to incur losses every day, we do not know how we can sustain our businesses and provide for our living expenses in the future,\u201d Yesi said during the public hearing with Commission IV of the DPR RI.<\/h6>\n
She noted that falling egg prices amid rising feed costs were not a new problem. The situation recurs every year, leaving smallholder farmers struggling with production costs while selling prices fail to generate adequate profits.<\/h6>\n
Yesi urged the government not to allow the problem to continue recurring without addressing its root causes. According to her, smallholder farmers need policies that provide certainty and protection for the sustainability of their businesses.<\/h6>\n
\u201cWe sincerely appeal to the government to protect us and other small-scale farmers. We hope regulations or policies will be introduced that can genuinely safeguard the sustainability of smallholder farming businesses,\u201d she stressed.<\/h6>\n
She added that protecting smallholder farmers is essential because, for many small-scale operators, raising layer chickens is not merely a business activity but also their family\u2019s primary source of livelihood.<\/h6>\n
