POULTRYINDONESIA, EAST JAVA<\/strong> \u2014 Amid the various challenges still facing smallholder farmers, effective communication between industry stakeholders and the government is essential to driving improvements in the livestock sector. Criticism of government policies remains necessary, but government initiatives that are considered beneficial to farmers also deserve appreciation. This is the position expressed by Fathoni Mahmudi, Chairman of the East Java Regional Board of LPER, who supports the LPER Central Board’s initiative to thank the government for several programs whose benefits have been felt by smallholder farmers.<\/h6>\n
According to Fathoni, relations between the government and farmers should not be characterized solely by demands and criticism. Appreciation for programs that deliver tangible benefits should also be expressed as part of efforts to build constructive partnerships. Through open communication, unresolved issues can be discussed jointly to find solutions.<\/h6>\n
\u201cFor us, expressing gratitude does not mean that all problems have been resolved. However, when we have experienced the benefits of a particular program, we must have the courage to acknowledge them. If there are still aspects that need improvement, those must also be communicated. What matters is maintaining good communication so that various issues can be discussed and solutions found together,\u201d Fathoni said in a written statement on Monday (October 19).<\/h6>\n
He expressed his appreciation to Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman and the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Food Agency (Bapanas), and the state-owned logistics company Perum Bulog for their various efforts to support the needs of smallholder farmers.<\/h6>\n
Fathoni believes that the smallholder livestock sector requires sustained attention because business operators face numerous challenges that cannot always be resolved in the short term. Therefore, communication among the government, cooperatives, and farmers must continue to be strengthened to ensure that policies address actual needs on the ground.<\/h6>\n
He also emphasized that every farmer operates under different business conditions. Differences in experience and perspectives when assessing government policies are natural. However, these differences should not hinder efforts to build cooperation for the broader benefit of smallholder farmers.<\/h6>\n
\u201cEveryone naturally has their own assessment, and we respect that. However, we must also be able to recognize the positive aspects of programs that have been implemented. If something is beneficial, we should appreciate it. If something needs improvement, we should communicate that constructively. Differences in opinion should not cause us to lose our determination to find solutions,\u201d he said.<\/h6>\n
Fathoni added that smallholder farmers need to strengthen their independence in managing their businesses. Government support is an important factor, but farmers’ readiness to adapt, improve business management, and innovate is equally integral to the success of the livestock sector.<\/h6>\n
According to him, a dynamic economic environment requires farmers to be more diligent in calculating production costs, managing risks, and considering new business opportunities that align with their respective capabilities.<\/h6>\n
In line with the government’s corn cultivation program, Fathoni encouraged smallholder farmers to seriously explore the opportunities it offers. He hopes the program can be developed through effective coordination, allowing farmers to participate in efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector and national food security.<\/h6>\n

\u201cWe must not focus solely on the problems we are currently facing. Farmers must continue learning, innovating, and seeking opportunities. If there are government programs with potential for development, let us study them carefully and adapt them to our capabilities. What matters is the willingness to take action and improve the situation,\u201d he explained.<\/h6>\n
In running livestock businesses, Fathoni reminded farmers that profits and losses are inherent business risks. Not every decision will generate a profit, making evaluation essential for identifying the causes of problems and determining corrective measures.<\/h6>\n
He urged farmers not to be quick to blame others when facing difficulties. In his view, the habit of finding scapegoats will not resolve business problems. Instead, honest evaluation and a willingness to learn from experience will help farmers make better decisions.<\/h6>\n
\u201cWhen we suffer losses, we must have the courage to evaluate ourselves. Review our business management, production costs, and the decisions we have made. Do not make fellow farmers the ones to blame. We need to build solidarity because the challenges we face must be addressed through concrete action and solutions,\u201d Fathoni stressed.<\/h6>\n
He believes that appreciation for the government must also be accompanied by farmers’ commitment to actively contributing to business sustainability. Farmers should not merely be beneficiaries of government programs but also partners who provide input, operate their businesses responsibly, and support efforts to develop the food sector.<\/h6>\n
Fathoni hopes the government will continue to provide opportunities for dialogue with smallholder farmers so that their concerns can be communicated and addressed constructively. At the same time, he called on all LPER members to maintain unity, strengthen solidarity, and avoid being divided by differences of opinion.<\/h6>\n
Concluding his statement, Fathoni reaffirmed that the East Java Regional Board of LPER supports the Central Board’s commitment to promoting appreciation, communication, and cooperation with the government.<\/h6>\n
\u201cWe would like to thank Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, the Ministry of Agriculture and its staff, the National Food Agency, and Perum Bulog for their efforts and programs whose benefits have been experienced by smallholder farmers. We hope that successful initiatives will be continued and further improved. Here in East Java, we are also ready to encourage farmers to become more independent, adaptable, and productive. For us, appreciating the government’s efforts, providing constructive evaluations, and continuously improving our businesses are complementary steps toward advancing smallholder livestock farming and strengthening Indonesia’s food security,\u201d he concluded.<\/h6>\n
