Once known primarily as a growth promoter, feed additives have evolved into a key contributor to poultry production efficiency.<\/em><\/h6>\n
In the modern poultry industry, feed additives may be used in relatively small quantities in feed. However, their role cannot be measured by how much is added. Today, feed additives serve an increasingly diverse range of functions, from helping maintain feed quality and supporting gut health to improving nutrient digestibility and enhancing production efficiency.<\/h6>\n
Feed additives themselves are not new. They were used long before the term became as widely recognized as it is today. Changing industry needs, technological advances, and policy shifts have since broadened their role. Once largely associated with disease control and growth promotion, feed additives are now among the tools considered when developing poultry nutrition strategies.<\/h6>\n
The Evolution of Feed Additives in Indonesia<\/strong><\/h6>\n

Looking further back, the use of feed additives worldwide has a long history. During an online discussion on Wednesday (August 26), Tony Unandar<\/strong>, a Private Poultry Consultant, explained that when he began working in the field in 1986, feed additives were already being used in Indonesia. Some of their earliest applications were related to disease control in poultry.<\/h6>\n
\u201cHistorically, the use of feed additives was initially associated largely with efforts to control coccidiosis. One example was the use of nicarbazin mixed into feed. Previously, coccidiosis was more commonly controlled by administering medication through drinking water.\u201d<\/h6>\n
As the industry developed, the types of feed additives used and their intended purposes became increasingly diverse. From the outset, feed additives were not developed solely to accelerate chicken growth. Their use evolved in response to the challenges facing the industry. As those challenges changed, so did the need for particular types of additives.<\/h6>\n
\u201cOver time, the poultry industry has become increasingly familiar with other feed additives, such as antioxidants and mycotoxin binders. This means that feed additives have long been an integral part of poultry production systems, although they did not receive as much attention as they do today. A major shift came when the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) began to be phased out,\u201d he explained.<\/h6>\n
Desianto Budi Utomo<\/strong>, Vice President of PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia, echoed this view. According to him, feed additive use has developed rapidly, particularly over the past decade, in line with policy changes concerning the use of antibiotics as growth promoters.<\/h6>\n
\u201cThe use of feed additives has developed very rapidly, especially over the past 10 years, or since the ban on antibiotics as antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs),\u201d Desianto stated in a written response on Wednesday (August 19).<\/h6>\n
He explained that following the ban, the industry began exploring various types of feed additives that could fulfill some of the functions previously provided by AGPs. Enzymes, acidifiers, probiotics, prebiotics, and combinations of several ingredients have since become increasingly prominent. He also noted that feed additives can influence production efficiency.<\/h6>\n
\u201cWhen nutrients in feed can be utilized more effectively, the opportunity to achieve optimal performance also increases. Feed additives can make a substantial contribution to improving feed efficiency, either by enhancing digestibility or by improving the utilization of nutrients contained in the feed,\u201d he explained.<\/h6>\n
Desianto noted that feed can account for approximately 70\u201375% of total chicken production costs. However, efficiency is not solely a matter of feed costs. He emphasized that gut health is also essential because the intestines are the primary site of nutrient digestion and absorption.<\/h6>\n
\u201cIf the intestines do not develop properly or suffer damage, the ability to digest and absorb nutrients from the feed will decline,\u201d he said.<\/h6>\n
