POULTRYINDONESIA, Tangerang \u2013<\/strong> Indonesia\u2019s feed and poultry industries faced various challenges throughout 2026. Nevertheless, growth opportunities in 2027 remain promising, driven by rising demand for animal protein and the country\u2019s significant domestic market potential.<\/h6>\n
This was highlighted at the 2026 GPMT National Seminar, organized by the Indonesian Feedmills Association (Gabungan Perusahaan Makanan Ternak\/GPMT) at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD, Tangerang, on Thursday (November 5, 2026), alongside the Nusantara Livestock & Poultry Expo 2026. Carrying the theme \u201cFrom Challenges to Opportunities: Evaluating the Poultry Business in 2026 and Accelerating Growth in 2027,\u201d the seminar served as a forum to evaluate industry developments and discuss strategies for addressing future challenges.<\/h6>\n
Seminar Committee Chair Yetti Liza stated that 2026 had not been an easy year for the feed and poultry industries. Business players faced market dynamics, challenges related to the availability and price stability of feed ingredients, as well as pressure on live bird and egg prices, all of which affected the sustainability of livestock businesses.<\/h6>\n
\u201cWhen supply chains are disrupted, the entire business ecosystem, from upstream to downstream, feels the impact,\u201d she said.<\/h6>\n
Nevertheless, Yetti believes that Indonesia\u2019s feed and poultry industries have strong resilience. Looking ahead to 2027, GPMT remains optimistic about growth opportunities in the feed industry through technology adoption, improved production efficiency, diversification, and the optimization of locally sourced feed ingredients.<\/h6>\n
Meanwhile, Director of Feed at the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health Services (PKH), Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Tri Melasari, S.Pt., M.Si., representing the Director General of PKH, said that the seminar’s theme was highly relevant to current industry conditions. Referring to the Alltech Agri-Food Outlook 2026 survey, she noted that the main challenge facing the global feed industry was production costs, including raw materials, energy, and labor, accounting for 29%. This was followed by macroeconomic conditions at 17% and geopolitical tensions at 16%.<\/h6>\n
Despite these challenges, the domestic market continues to offer promising opportunities. Based on projections in the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2026\u20132035, Indonesia’s poultry meat consumption is expected to increase from 13.5 kg per capita annually to 19 kg by 2035. Meanwhile, egg consumption is projected to rise from 21.2 kg to 29.6 kg per capita annually.<\/h6>\n
\u201cThe substantial market potential needs to be anticipated by the feed and poultry industries through cost efficiency, supply certainty, and a balance between production and market absorption capacity,\u201d Mela explained.<\/h6>\n
This potential is also reflected in data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) through its National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas). In 2025, the household consumption participation rate for commercial chicken eggs reached 91.56%, while that for commercial chicken meat stood at 60.76%. The high consumption of poultry products further reinforces the role of commercial poultry as a major contributor to the national supply of animal protein.<\/h6>\n
However, growing demand for animal protein must be supported by the readiness of the feed industry. Data from the Directorate of Feed showed that national feed production reached 20.35 million tons in 2025, representing a 10.57% increase compared with the previous year. From January to September 2026, production grew by another 12.28% to 16.82 million tons.<\/h6>\n
Mela explained that feed remained the largest component of livestock production costs, accounting for 67.82% in commercial broiler operations and 74.66% in commercial layer operations at the company level. Consequently, fluctuations in raw material prices have a significant impact on business efficiency and farmers’ incomes.<\/h6>\n
\u201cDependence on global markets and exchange rate fluctuations must be anticipated through more efficient feed formulations, diversification, and the optimal utilization of local feed ingredients,\u201d she noted.<\/h6>\n
On the supply side, imports of plant-based feed ingredients reached 7.696 million tons in 2025, an increase of 39.14% compared with 2019. Meanwhile, domestic corn prices also showed an upward trend. The average price of corn with a 14% moisture content from January to September 2026 reached Rp6,719\/kg, compared with Rp6,069\/kg in 2025.<\/h6>\n
In response to these conditions, Mela emphasized the importance of strengthening supply, improving quality, enhancing logistics efficiency, and ensuring the absorption of raw materials. According to her, all segments of the industry need to build synergies to ensure that production growth remains balanced with market demand.<\/h6>\n
\u201cThe feed and poultry industries cannot operate independently. The entire business chain must be interconnected, starting from raw material supply, feed manufacturing, breeding, farming, and extending to processing and marketing,\u201d she stressed.<\/h6>\n
Looking ahead to 2027, Mela identified three priorities that need to be strengthened: improving supply security and efficiency through raw material diversification and domestic partnerships; increasing productivity and added value through innovation and technology; and maintaining a balance between production, demand, and market absorption capacity.<\/h6>\n
Through collaboration among all stakeholders, Indonesia’s feed and poultry industries are expected to transform various challenges into stronger and more sustainable growth opportunities.<\/h6>\n
