POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta – Indonesia has abundant natural resources, for instance, its biological diversity and one of the valuable resource is native chicken. This one poultry is a form of wealth owned by Indonesia. According to the Poultry Geneticist, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Padjajaran University, Dr. agr. Ir. Asep Anang, M. Phil, in terminology, local chickens consist of two types, such as indigenous chicken or native chickens, which are chickens originating from the domestication of jungle fowl which have unique characteristics and habituate in a particular area.
The second is adapted chicken, which is a local chicken that comes from outside Indonesia which has adapted to the local environment after several years. For instance Arabic chicken, Nunukan chicken, and Swamp chicken. Asep said, native Indonesian chickens have a variety of feather colour characteristics, have long legs with white, yellow, or black colours; has a yellow, white, or black skin and beak colour; and has a slender posture.

In its development, there are two terms in local chickens which have different goals and methods. First is conservation or preservation which in this conservation the nature and diversity of chickens remain constant (to maintain diversity) and the second is breeding, where this breeding is directed according to human desires so that a lot of heterogeneity created. In addition, breeding can also change the shape of the chicken so that the chicken will be different from the original. That is what makes researchers pay attention to what they are working on.
Unfortunately, local chicken development often constrained by a variety of obstacles. If in the future producers are able to provide affordable native chicken products for the community, there will be an ameliorate diversification of Indonesia’s animal protein. Therefore, a synergy between parties needed to be improved. Chusnul
