POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta – Purebred chicken eggs, a primary source of animal protein widely consumed by the public, are confirmed to be in a safe and sufficient condition. To date, national egg consumption needs are fully met by domestic poultry farmers.

Based on projections from the National Food Agency (Bapanas), the availability of eggs is guaranteed to remain secure through the upcoming Eid al-Fitr period. This condition is supported by a relatively large domestic production surplus.

Bapanas assesses that current fluctuations in egg prices are seasonal in nature and not directly linked to President Prabowo Subianto’s priority program, the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. Thus far, the MBG program’s contribution to the increased demand for eggs is considered insignificant.

“Our national egg stocks are more than enough to meet needs. Supply is also safe during Ramadan because we have a surplus. There are no issues from a supply standpoint. While the MBG program does have an impact, it is still minor. We are also approaching Christmas and New Year, so it is natural for demand to rise slightly,” said the Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilization at Bapanas, I Gusti Ketut Astawa, in Jakarta, Wednesday (Dec 24, 2024).

In the National Food Balance Projection updated monthly, the government noted that national demand for eggs—including the needs of the Nutritional Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) under the MBG program—can be fully met by domestic production. Out of the total national consumption, the portion required for SPPG remains relatively small.

Total annual national egg consumption is estimated to reach 6.487 million tons. Of that amount, SPPG requirements in 2025 are estimated at approximately 1.96%, or equivalent to 127.3 thousand tons. Meanwhile, national egg production is higher, reaching up to 6.561 million tons per year.

The national year-end stock of eggs in 2025 is also projected to increase significantly. Bapanas estimates year-end stocks could reach 74.5 thousand tons, a surge of 154.2% compared to the 2024 year-end stock of 29.3 thousand tons.

Nevertheless, the government continues to monitor egg price developments in the market. Retail prices are expected to remain in line with the Government Reference Price (HAP) of IDR 30,000 per kilogram.

“In principle, we coordinate regularly with farmers. They are committed to maintaining farm-gate prices in the range of IDR 22,000–IDR 25,000 per kilogram. Therefore, traders should still be able to sell at IDR 30,000,” Ketut explained.

Separately, the Head of Bapanas, who also serves as the Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, emphasized the importance of vigilance in monitoring egg price dynamics despite the secure national stock.

“Alhamdulillah, the egg situation is good, but we must not be complacent. Stocks are sufficient, so prices must not rise. If they do, we will take action. Purebred chicken eggs are more than enough, so they are safe,” Amran asserted while inspecting Wonokromo Market in Surabaya, East Java, Monday (Dec 23, 2025).
