POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta – The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) is encouraging stronger collaboration between research institutions and the food industry through synergy between the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and Perum BULOG in developing efficient and sustainable food storage technologies.
The Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, Agung Suganda, attended the signing of an addendum to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BRIN and BULOG at the B.J. Habibie Building in Jakarta on Friday (March 27, 2026). This collaboration focuses on leveraging technological innovation to extend the shelf life of food with greater cost efficiency.
For the livestock sector, this innovation is considered to provide direct benefits, particularly in improving the durability of animal-based products such as eggs. With a longer shelf life, potential losses due to quality degradation can be reduced, while maintaining supply stability in the market.
Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, explained that his institution has developed non-refrigerated storage technology capable of preserving commodity quality at room temperature.
“This technology enables eggs to be stored for up to two months and rice for up to two years without refrigeration, making it more energy- and cost-efficient,” said Arif.
Meanwhile, President Director of Perum BULOG, Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani, stated that this innovation serves as a strategic solution to maintain the quality of national food stocks amid increasing reserve volumes.
According to him, the need for storage technology is becoming more urgent, in line with projections that national food reserves could reach 6 million tons by 2026.
From an industry perspective, this technology opens opportunities for cost efficiency in logistics and storage, while also enhancing product competitiveness. For farmers, improved storage systems help maintain price stability, as products are less likely to spoil or go to waste.
Responding to this, Agung emphasized that post-harvest innovation is a key factor in ensuring the sustainability of livestock businesses.
“Strengthening food storage technology is crucial to reducing losses, maintaining product quality, and providing business certainty for farmers,” he said.
He added that synergy between research, industry, and government is essential in building an efficient and competitive national food system.
The Ministry of Agriculture views the BRIN–BULOG collaboration as a concrete step in delivering innovation-based solutions to address national food logistics challenges. Moving forward, the adoption of technology will continue to be encouraged to ensure optimal supply chain performance, so that farmers and business actors gain real benefits, and the public receives safe, high-quality, and affordable food.
