Caramel pudding is an excellent choice for Ramadan takjil (fast-breaking snacks). Not only is it sweet and silky, but it is also high in protein from eggs and milk, helping to restore energy and provide a longer-lasting sense of fullness after a day of fasting.
“Breaking the fast with something sweet” remains a timeless slogan for Muslims across the country during Ramadan. This long-awaited holy month is synonymous with sweet treats as the opening menu. Aside from providing an instant energy boost after a day without food or water, sweet takjil also satisfies the “hungry eyes” often felt as sunset approaches.
One interesting alternative is caramel pudding, a classic dessert with a smooth texture and a flavor familiar to the palate. Widely known as an egg-and-milk-based dessert, it naturally contains enough protein to help meet our daily nutritional needs.
Unlike many sugar-based snacks, caramel pudding offers a combination of carbohydrates, fats, and protein in a single serving. This protein content comes from the eggs and the milk or creamer used. Especially for mothers looking to provide adequate nutrition for their families, the protein in this dish aids the body’s cell recovery process. Furthermore, protein promotes satiety (feeling full longer), making it a great snack option for Sahur (the pre-dawn meal) as well.
Chef Devina Hermawan, a culinary influencer known for her foolproof recipes, shared her version of caramel pudding via her YouTube channel and TikTok. This recipe is a great reference because it is simple and can be made without an oven, making it easy to try at home. Let’s take a look!

    • 2 Whole eggs
    • 30g Granulated sugar
    • ¼ tsp Salt
    • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
    • 50g Creamer powder

    • 10g Cornstarch
(Note: The creamer, water, and cornstarch can be replaced with liquid milk.)

  2. Mix the Base: Combine the whole eggs, egg yolks, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract in a bowl.
  3. Thicken the Liquids: Cook the creamer powder, water, and cornstarch in a pot, stirring well until slightly thickened. (Skip this if using liquid milk).
  4. Combine: Slowly pour the creamer mixture (or milk) into the egg mixture while stirring continuously.
  5. Steam: Strain the mixture and pour it into the molds. Cover with aluminum foil and steam for 30–35 minutes.
  6. Serve: Your caramel pudding is ready to accompany your Iftar.
