POULTRYINDONESIA, Sleman — A social inclusion-based layer chicken farming initiative has marked a new milestone in the poultry sector. Telur Moe, a farming unit fostered by the Empowerment of People Council (MPM) of PP Muhammadiyah, has been recorded as the world’s first layer chicken farm managed by people with disabilities to earn the international Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) certification.
This achievement was further solidified through the launch of the “Inclusion-Based Economic Improvement Partnership Program through Healthy Layer Chicken Development” on Wednesday (December 31, 2025). The program is a collaboration between MPM PP Muhammadiyah, Lazismu, and ‘Aisyiyah University Yogyakarta (Unisa), focusing on technical capacity building, production management, and the implementation of animal welfare standards in community farming.
Interestingly, the members of the Muhammadiyah Farmer Congregation (Jatam) for the Disabled who manage this farm had no prior background in poultry farming. However, through continuous mentoring, the production system was immediately aligned with global standards, including the animal welfare principles required for HFAC certification.
High Standards and Accessibility
Under the HFAC scheme, layer chickens are raised with appropriate stocking density, access to high-quality feed and water, and a hygienic environment that supports natural behaviors. This system eliminates the use of cramped battery cages and demands more precise maintenance management. Despite these rigorous standards, productivity at the Telur Moe unit remains steady and sits above the industry average.
In terms of facilities, the farm is designed to be disability-friendly. The coop access is wheelchair-compatible, allowing all workers to be directly involved in daily activities—from maintenance to egg production management. This approach is seen as a way to boost economic independence while expanding the role of people with disabilities in the food production supply chain.
MPM PP Muhammadiyah believes that the success of Telur Moe is not only socially relevant but also proof that inclusion-based farming can meet international standards. This model is expected to be replicated as a sustainable, ethical, and globally competitive alternative for developing community-based livestock farming.
