POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta β After closing 2025 by securing rice food security, the direction of national self-sufficiency policy is now shifting toward other essential commodities, while simultaneously maintaining the production stability of rice and corn in 2026.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture (Wamentan), Sudaryono, stated that in addition to sugar and salt, the government has placed animal protein as a priority focus. Self-sufficiency targets for 2026 have been set for eggs, chicken meat, and beef, alongside sugar and salt.
βFor the initial stage, our focus is on strengthening the production of eggs and chicken meat, especially in regions outside of Java. Most poultry farms are still concentrated on Java Island, making other regions highly dependent on supplies from Java. Therefore, the President wants every region to have its own food security, particularly to meet the needs of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program,β Sudaryono said on Monday (5/1).
He added that in 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture will implement two strategic programs simultaneously. The first program emphasizes increasing national sugar production, while the second is directed toward accelerating protein self-sufficiency by strengthening the production of eggs and chicken meat.
The development focus for poultry commodities will be expanded to regions outside of Java. To date, most needs have relied on supplies from Java. Consequently, strengthening regional production is considered vital to ensure food security is more evenly distributed while supporting the independence of every province.
To bolster this production independence, the government has planned the construction of integrated chicken farms in 13 provinces. This development will involve collaboration between State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), poultry cooperatives (including the Kopdes Merah Putih), and local business actors. This integrated model is expected to strengthen the production chain while streamlining the distribution of chicken and egg products.
