POULTRYINDONESIA, Bogor – The national poultry sector continues to demonstrate its strategic role in the Indonesian economy. In addition to being the primary provider of animal protein, this sector supports employment for approximately 12.5 million people and drives an economic turnover reaching tens of trillions of rupiah annually. Its contribution is also significant in strengthening food security, increasing public income, and opening export opportunities.
The Chairman of the Association of Independent Smallholder Poultry Farmers of Indonesia (PERMINDO), Kusnan, emphasized that behind this vast potential, the poultry industry still faces various challenges. These range from global competition, high production costs, efficiency and productivity issues, and access to financing, to government policies such as reference prices and the price stability of feed raw materials and poultry products.
During a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) themed “The 2026 Poultry Outlook” at the Royal Hotel, Bogor, on Thursday (Feb 12), Kusnan stated that PERMINDO serves as a bridge between the aspirations of smallholder farmers, government policy, and industry dynamics. According to him, the organization brings field data, practical experience, and a commitment to building a fair and sustainable poultry ecosystem. The event also featured the official inauguration of the PERMINDO association, attended by independent poultry farmers from various regions.
He stressed that this discussion forum is a strategic step to ensure that the voices of smallholder farmers are not only heard but become an integral part of national poultry policy formulation. PERMINDO, he continued, does not exist to oppose any party, but rather to ensure that smallholder farmers remain viable, competitive, and sustainable.
Meanwhile, Herry Iriawan asserted that PERMINDO was not formed to compete with other associations, but to complement and strengthen pre-existing organizations. He noted that cross-stakeholder collaboration is the key to maintaining the sustainability of the national poultry industry.
Entering 2026, the direction of government policy in the poultry sector has become a major concern for business actors, particularly with the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal program, which positions poultry products as a primary protein source. On the other hand, plans to strengthen food security through the provision of feed raw materials—such as soybean meal and wheat—via large-scale integrated livestock investments are also seen as requiring intensive dialogue among stakeholders.
Therefore, PERMINDO is encouraging the creation of constructive communication spaces between farmers, industry players, the government, academics, and relevant stakeholders to formulate a national poultry direction that is adaptive, inclusive, and sustainable.
