Poultry Dynamics Ahead of Ramadan and Eid
The surge in poultry consumption leading up to Ramadan and Eid has prompted the government to tighten oversight from upstream to downstream to ensure that supplies remain secure, prices are controlled, and farmers can remain profitable.
National Religious Holidays (HBKN), particularly Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, are the most anticipated moments for the majority of Indonesians. This momentum is not only awaited by Muslims who will fast for a full month followed by the Eid celebrations, but also by all parties capable of identifying and capitalizing on the available opportunities.
It has become a common phenomenon that when the fasting month arrives, the demand for various types of basic necessities increases. Technically, public consumption patterns do decrease; where people usually eat three times a day, fasting reduces this to twice.
However, from a social perspective, nighttime activities from ifthar (breaking the fast) to suhoor (the pre-dawn meal) become more vibrant with traditions of dining together, at least within the family circle. Additionally, the menus served tend to be more special, abundant, and complete than on ordinary days. These traditions boost consumption levels across the community. Therefore, it is no surprise that the demand for basic commodities rises, followed by price increases—including for poultry-based food products.
In this context, chicken meat and eggs are among the primary food staples relied upon by the Indonesian people. Particularly during Ramadan and Eid, a spike in demand for these commodities is almost certain. Besides being affordable, their abundant availability makes them easily accessible to the public in both traditional and modern markets.
Poultry Supply Deemed Secure
It is undeniable that the HBKN momentum is a crucial period that must be meticulously prepared for by all stakeholders. In the Coordination Meeting for HBKN Security held in Jakarta on Thursday (Jan 22), the government ensured that the supply of chicken meat and eggs ahead of Ramadan and Eid 2026 is in a secure condition.
Minister of Agriculture, Amran Sulaiman, emphasized that national stocks of eggs and chicken meat are sufficient to meet public needs throughout Ramadan and Eid. In fact, national poultry production is currently considered to be in a surplus. Therefore, according to him, there is no reason to import. “Our production of broiler meat and eggs is sufficient—even in surplus—so there is no reason to import. The public does not need to worry regarding the availability of eggs and chicken meat,” he stated.
The government, he continued, alongside the National Police Food Task Force, state-owned food enterprises (BUMN), and all business actors, is committed to maintaining the availability and affordability of chicken and eggs so they remain accessible during HBKN 2026. He also urged the public and business actors not to hesitate in reporting any fraudulent practices in the field, whether related to pricing, distribution, or the supply of food commodities, specifically eggs and chicken meat.
