POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta – Poultry Industry which produces poultry product, such as chicken meat, have to undergo a long process. Start from procurement of Great Grand Parent Stock (GGPS) that imported from a foreign breeding company, then raised in Indonesia through another series of long processes to produce the final stock.

Supply chain activities in broiler chicken consist of rearing process from Day Old Chick (DOC) until finally it can be processed into chicken meat which is ready to go to the market, straight from farmers to consumers. Based on an article written by Saptana and Rangga Ditya with the title Application of Supply Chain Management Concepts in Poultry Products, stated that supply chain management is integrations of procurement of material and service activities, conversion of semi-finished goods and final products, as well as delivery to customers (Heizer and Render 2010).

Surely the poultry industry must pay attention to supply chain rather than focusing only on the production itself. Because basically, other activities in the chicken supply chain can also create added value that benefits each party in the chain of production and distribution of products from farmers to consumers. However, if the supply chain system is too long, it also tends to be inefficient. Such as the situation that still happened in the supply chain system of poultry product in Indonesia. This creates anomaly where the price in farm gate (producer) sink, whereas in consumer have to pay which significantly higher. In other words, the farm gate price almost has no effect on poultry product price in the consumer.

Another important aspect that should become a consideration is about food safety because chicken meat is a perishable food.
