In addition to working as a nutritionist and business development manager, Henri is actively involved in teaching, writing, sharing knowledge, and creating educational content to bridge science, industry experience, and the younger generation.
From Business and Music to Poultry Nutrition
The poultry industry was not a field that drh. Henri E. Prasetyo, M.Vet, a poultry practitioner and nutritionist at PT Dinamika Megatama Citra (DMC), initially envisioned pursuing. During his school years, he was more interested in business and music. Becoming a nutritionist or working in the livestock industry had never crossed his mind.
His educational choices eventually led him in a different direction. Henri earned his undergraduate degree from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Universitas Airlangga, then pursued a master’s degree in agribusiness with a focus on nutrition. Through this journey, he became more familiar with the poultry industry and eventually decided to make it his career path.
“Career-wise, I never actually wanted to work in the livestock industry. Back then, I was more interested in becoming an entrepreneur. I also used to enjoy playing music, so I never imagined becoming a nutritionist or working in animal farming,” he said via Zoom on Friday (September 11).
Henri’s career progressed gradually. He began in a technical role, moved into Research and Development (R&D), and eventually became a poultry nutrition specialist. Today, he holds two positions at PT DMC, serving as both a nutritionist and business development manager.
Working for a company with an integrated poultry business, spanning everything from grandparent stock (GPS) to processed food products, has allowed him to view the industry from multiple perspectives. Poultry nutrition and performance remain central to his work, but he must also understand business needs and customer expectations.
This experience has led Henri to view poultry farming as an industry that never stands still. Changes in chicken genetics, raw material availability, government policies, and on-farm performance can all influence the decisions that need to be made. In his view, working in the poultry industry means being prepared to adapt continuously.
For Henri, a nutritionist must understand more than just nutrition. The job also requires consideration of bird performance, on-farm conditions, and the profitability that farmers and customers can achieve.
“In the livestock industry, nobody is truly an expert who knows everything. What matters is being willing to keep learning. Livestock farming is not just about animals; it is also about business. We have to think about how to achieve good performance while ensuring the business remains profitable,” he said enthusiastically.
Bringing Industry Experience into the Classroom
Henri does not limit the knowledge and experience he gains from the industry to his professional responsibilities. He also brings these insights into academia, actively teaching at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Vocational Faculty of Universitas Airlangga. He has also been invited on several occasions to share his professional experience as an industry practitioner at Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Universitas Wijaya Kusuma, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Universitas Gadjah Mada.
Beyond the university environment, Henri regularly speaks at various seminars and contributes articles to several media outlets, including Poultry Indonesia. He also frequently shares his knowledge and professional experience on social media under the name “Dokter Pakan Indonesia,” or “Dokter Pakan” (Indonesia’s Feed Doctor).
