This traditional Minangkabau drink combines hot tea with egg yolk, creating a unique sweet and savory flavor while being believed to restore stamina since the colonial era.
Like many traditional Indonesian beverages, teh talua (egg tea) is more than just a thirst quencher. Behind its simple appearance lies a long story of local customs, the wisdom of utilizing available ingredients, and traditions passed down from generation to generation.
Originating from West Sumatra, teh talua has existed for hundreds of years. During the Dutch colonial period, local communities made use of easily accessible ingredients—tea and eggs—to create an energy-boosting drink that helped maintain stamina. The combination of hot tea and egg yolk produces a smooth texture with a distinctive sweet and savory taste. At a glance, it resembles milk tea or pulled tea, but with a layer of fine foam on top that gives it a uniquely soft sensation.
For some, this combination may sound unusual. Many may also worry about the lingering eggy smell. However, since the egg yolk is whisked with sugar until foamy before being mixed with hot tea, the strong odor is effectively eliminated. A squeeze of lime juice is then added to provide a refreshing finish while further neutralizing any remaining aroma.
In the past, the Minangkabau people believed that teh talua could warm the body and restore energy. For this reason, it was commonly sought after by workers and traders after a long day of physical activity. Today, the drink is still widely available in cafés and eateries across West Sumatra. Not only is it محبوب among locals, but it has also become a unique culinary experience for tourists seeking to explore Minangkabau heritage.
