POULTRYINDONESIA, Jakarta – Efforts to strengthen national food security continue to be encouraged through synergy among all stakeholders. One concrete step has been realized through visits and training activities held at the facilities of PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia Tbk (CPI), attended by Expert Staff of Committee II of the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI).
In his remarks, the President Director of PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia Tbk, Dr. (H.C.) Tjiu Thomas Effendy, S.E., MBA., stated that CPI has been part of the long journey of modernizing Indonesia’s livestock sector since its establishment in 1972. According to him, the company remains committed to developing the national poultry industry from upstream to downstream, ranging from feed, breeding farms, to processed products.
Currently, CPI has a production network spread across various regions in Indonesia, including multiple breeding farms to ensure even and high-quality distribution of DOC (Day Old Chick). In addition, Thomas emphasized that partnerships with local farmers are also a key focus in strengthening the national poultry industry ecosystem.
“Indonesia is already in a surplus condition for poultry protein. Our challenge going forward is how to ensure its distribution is even and reaches areas that still need it,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Chair of Committee II of DPD RI, Dr. Badikenita Br Sitepu, S.E., S.H., M.Si., stressed that the agriculture and livestock sectors are currently national strategic priorities. She encouraged every region to build self-sufficiency in providing animal protein, particularly through poultry commodities, which are considered more stable in distribution compared to other commodities.
According to her, collaboration with the private sector such as CPI is very important in providing assistance to local farmers, from technical aspects to business management.
“Through strong partnerships, we not only increase production but also drive regional economic growth and community welfare,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Livestock and Animal Health of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. drh. Agung Suganda, M.Si., highlighted the significant potential of the national poultry industry, which has currently recorded a production surplus, both for chicken meat and eggs.
He mentioned that this industry has a very large economic turnover and is one of the key sectors in supporting food security. However, the challenge lies in the concentration of production on the island of Java, making it necessary to encourage development in regions outside Java.
“We encourage business actors, including prospective farmers, to see opportunities outside Java. The government has also prepared various livestock cluster development programs in several provinces,” he explained.
In addition, he emphasized that the government continues to strengthen protection for the domestic industry by limiting imports of poultry products and promoting increased exports to various destination countries.
“The key going forward is equal distribution of production and strengthening collaboration, so that Indonesia is not only strong domestically but also capable of becoming a major player in the global market,” he concluded.
