POULTRYINDONESIA, Gunung Kidul – The government will investigate the chicken and egg supply chains from farm to retail following price disparities that are considered detrimental to farmers while placing a burden on consumers. Inspections will be conducted jointly with the Food Task Force to identify the causes of these price differences and follow up on suspected unfair trade practices.
The initiative was announced by Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman during a visit to the breeding farm of PT Widodo Makmur Unggas in Gunung Kidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, on Thursday (October 15). The visit was part of the government’s efforts to assess the poultry industry as a whole, from breeding to product distribution to consumers.
“At the farm level, chicken prices are Rp20,000–Rp21,000 per kilogram, but by the time they reach the retail market, prices can reach Rp45,000 per kilogram. The same applies to eggs. This means there is a problem in the supply chain that we need to investigate from upstream to downstream,” Amran said.
According to him, these price disparities must be investigated to ensure that farmers do not continue to suffer losses amid high food prices faced by the public. The government will examine the trading chain to determine the causes of the price differences while monitoring practices that could harm both producers and consumers.
“Consumers and producers must not be manipulated. This concerns the livelihoods of many people. We must stand up for our people, both farmers and consumers,” he said.
In addition to monitoring trade practices, the government is also promoting measures to support farmers by improving the absorption of their products and reducing feed costs. The Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program has been urged to procure eggs directly from farmers at a reference price of Rp26,500 per kilogram.
The government is also encouraging the accelerated distribution of corn through the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program, as well as the provision of feed through ID FOOD. These measures are expected to help farmers obtain raw materials at more affordable prices.
At the same time, protecting farmers must go hand in hand with efforts to keep food prices affordable for the public. Chicken and eggs are widely consumed sources of protein, meaning that their supply and price stability directly affect households’ ability to meet their food needs.
During the visit, Amran also expressed his appreciation for business operators who have been involved in the poultry industry for decades and contributed to employment. The long-term sustainability of these businesses is considered important for strengthening Indonesia’s national poultry industry.
“We appreciate business operators who continue to work and contribute to society. The government will continue to oversee the sector to ensure that farmers are protected, businesses remain viable, and the public’s needs are met,” he said.
The Ministry of Agriculture will strengthen coordination with stakeholders to oversee policy implementation, improve distribution efficiency, and maintain a balance between prices at the producer and consumer levels. These efforts are expected to support the sustainability of poultry farming businesses while ensuring that the public can obtain chicken and eggs at fair prices.
